EGGMAN STORY

The poultry industry in Uganda is a significant source of employment across the entire value chain, in addition to bringing in UGX 20 billion per month into the economy from the sale of eggs. However, 80% of this revenue comes from the export of eggs to Kenya, 70% and 10%, Congo and South Sudan.

In 2019, Kenya placed a ban on poultry products from Uganda which significantly hurt the poultry farmers, especially those dealing in egg production. Uganda has a low market for eggs, consuming only 20% of the eggs produced leaving farmers without alternative markets. This challenge of lack of access to a ready market has forced farmers to take drastic measures to minimize loss including cutting the price of eggs by 50%. In some cases, poultry farmers have been forced to close down due to high costs of production and lack of revenue which has also led to the loss of jobs, especially among the youth.

To minimise further loss and return hope to the poultry industry, Eggman has embarked on a journey to create a market for eggs locally. We are doing this by educating people about the health benefits of consuming fresh eggs and through our platform where members have fresh eggs conveniently delivered to them every month for a subscription fee equivalent to the market price of eggs. Our goal is to create a ready market for eggs with stable prices and increase local consumption from 20% to 60% of what is produced. This will enable farmers to have stable incomes and shield them from market volatility, especially from international markets which they are heavily dependent on and have little control over.
